Top Things To Know If You Want To Get An Adorable Maltese Pomeranian

  1. Maltipom is the name commonly used for a maltese pomeranian.  Sometimes it is incorrectly called a multipom or malitpom.

  2. Its lifespan is about twelve to fourteen years.

  3. The maltese pomeranian weights about six to nine pounds at adulthood.

  4. These little dogs are white, cream, apricot, black, brown, or tan and may have spots on their tails, or streaks of color in various places.  Color will change as they mature.

  5. They are attached to their humans and prefer to be with you, they are loyal friends.

  6. The maltipom is high energy: To get energy out they need long walks every day, or toys to play with and the ability to run in the yard or indoors. They can play on their own and be content provided they get enough human contact overall.

  7. They can be funny and smart, with a carefree temperament.  Some antics may include running laps, waving their paws, and moving their arms in the air as if they are swimming.

  8. The long straight silken coat needs lots of brushing, cleaning and grooming in general.  The feet and rear need regular trimming. If not brushed daily the fur will mat. Their hair appears similar to a human’s.  A good option for non-show dogs is a nice short haircut. They don’t shed and can be hypoallergenic.

  9. They tend to have eye drainage and the eye area needs cleaning, preferably every other day.

  10. Ear infections are a common problem, but keeping their ears clean should prevent this.

  11. They are easy to train and eager to please.

  12. They don’t often do well with young children, but are ok with older ones. (This may not be true in cases where they are with little kids from puppy hood and children are instructed to be gentle.)

  13. Sometimes, a maltese pomeranian can be high strung.  However the high strung trait, possibly from its pomeranian half, is often off set by the maltese which leans toward mellowness.

  14. Must be socialized to assure they are not upset or scared by new people or strangers.

  15. These guys, although small, are sturdy, strong, little athletes.

  16. The maltese Pomeranian will love you and will show his or her affection.  Not at all aloof, they thrive on your love and praise.

  17. These cuddly creatures are great for apartment living, provided they are socialized to avoid excess barking - they are good as watch doggies.

  18. The teeth can be kept strong and healthy by providing dental bones for them to chew regularly, and by daily brushing.  Otherwise they tend to get bacteria on their teeth or gums, which can spread throughout the body and be very harmful or fatal.

  19. Because the maltese pomeranian is a hybrid (mix of 2 pure breeds), there are no “papers” and they have no AKC standing.  Therefore it is important that you verify the source from which you are buying the dog, and the parentage.  Ask for verification of good health and assurance that there are no inherent genetic defects.
